Digital Parenting | Open House | Episode 5

The fifth episode of Open House Digital Parenting was LIVE on 22nd May 2020 where expert Amitabh Kumar talked about various Social Media platforms and its Safety. The session emphasized the 'Age' being one of the main factors for a child to be online. As part of our initiative 'MyPincode' we are trying to connect with Parents/Guardians/Teachers to help them with Digital Parenting Tips.

TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat are some the common social media platforms majorly used by teenagers. Today, everyone is keen on having a social media presence. Even parents have the charm of creating profiles of their newborn babies or children below 13 years of age. It seems like the peer pressure is so strong that we somewhere negate the safety of the child. Just to highlight here, '13' is the number when a child can officially join these platforms. Or even joined earlier, the accounts should be managed by their parents/ under their guidance. It's a good practice to disclose that the account of an adolescent is being managed by the guardian/parent.

Another important aspect is that many of us do not seek 'Consent' of our children before sharing their pictures/videos. This certainly makes them vulnerable in online spaces. The Internet has become an integral part of our lives and everyday learning through it is adding to our offline behaviour too. Don't leave your child alone on the internet rather be a part of their exploring journey. Sit with them and navigate them while surfing.

It's not a good idea to keep internet away from children or to ban it rather we need to find solutions to safety by using 'Safety Features', 'Understanding the Community Guidelines' and 'Understanding Parental Controls'.

Our Digital Parenting Open House sessions are not only being LIVE on Facebook but we have expanded and you can join us LIVE on Instagram, Twitter and Youtube too.
